Chevrolet Extended Warranty

General Motors stands behind the quality of the Chevrolet models with a three year or 36,000 miles bumper-to-bumper factory warranty coverage on all new vehicles. The powertrain coverage extends for five years and 100,000 miles. A scheduled maintenance contract is available for two years or 24,000 miles.

The three-year warranty which works for people who only drive 12,000 miles a year covers all factory defects and problems, emission controls, all lubricated parts and roadside assistance. The roadside assistance includes flat tires, lockouts and fuel service. Some of the other parts covered with the 100,000 powertrain and engine coverage include:

  • turbocharger or supercharger,
  • fuel system including injectors
  • gaskets, manifolds, water pump, hoses and belts
  • electrical system and batteries
  • cylinder head
  • valve covers
  • torque converter
  • drive system

Corrosion problems have a 36,000 mile or three-year warranty and a warranty against rust is for six years or 100,000 miles. The heater system including the heater core and hoses is not covered.

For people on the road, 36,000 miles adds up quickly and additional extended warranty coverage may be necessary for vehicle maintenance and repairs. While Chevrolet dealers offer extended warranties, you may want to shop around for other third party service information. Tire manufacturers may provide their own warranties for new tires. Separate muffler companies also guarantee their exhaust system repairs.

Chevrolet does have an extended 24K mile or two year scheduled maintenance contract that covers the usual lube and oil change, tire rotation and balancing on most vehicles. It also covers the 27-point inspection including emission controls that many states require on an annual basis for re-licensing.

Extended Protection Plans

The additional Chevrolet protection coverage is actually the General Motors Protection Plan designed for the various GM makes and models from 2009 to the present. This is a prepaid service contract for mechanical breakdown and parts replacement. The GMPP for Chevrolet models includes roadside service and a temporary replacement vehicle while your car is being repaired.

The GMPP includes the extensive Major Guard contract, the Value Guard and Basic Guard. These parts and service contracts vary in price based on the age of the vehicle, how much it is driven each year and how long the owner plans to keep the car. The deductible also depends on the age of the vehicle, the make and model.

Not all GMC vehicles are eligible. Special provisions apply to trucks, some sports cars and hybrids.

The Major Guard contract GMPP covers engine replacement, air conditioning compressor, fuel pump, transfer case, transmission, steering pump and other items. The Basic Plan covers only the engine, fuel pump, transfer case and transmission.

Pre-Owned Cars

Certified pre-owned warranties are available when a used 2009 or later model Chevrolet is purchased from a dealer. The certification includes passing a 172-point vehicle inspection, the vehicle’s maintenance history and a maximum of 75,000 miles on the engine.

The powertrain warranty on certified models can be enhanced to six years or 100,000 miles. A 12-month bumper-to-bumper protection and 24,000 miles scheduled service contract can be included with the purchase. Buyers also have the GMPP options if the vehicle meets certain criteria.

The buyer will also have a three-day or 150-mile satisfaction guarantee on the pre-owned certified Chevrolet purchased from a dealership.

Third Party Coverage Providers

Chevrolet GMPP contracts work mainly at GMC service departments. You may find a service contract that works with independent repairs shop that service and repair Chevrolets and other GMC vehicles. They may offer roadside 7/24 service and towing. Before you purchase a plan from a third-party provider compare warranties, parts and service warranty contracts available for your Chevrolet. The cost of auto warranty from a third-party provider might be considerably lower than from the manufacturer.
